Catwoman – New 52

Catwoman issue 1 review DC new 52
The reboot of the DC Universe has certainly garnered DC comics and DC characters a lot of attention. While being less than enthusiastic about the reboot for characters like Batman I was looking forward to being able to jump in on the ground floor with some others I hadn’t been following. I bought the first few issues of Catwoman and I was suprised, amused and even entertained.

The premise of a cat burglar stealing from whom ever she chooses set in Gotham citys underworld is a fun one and the first few issues deliver. I’ll get the obvious out of the way first. This is not a comic for kids. In the first issue alone there’s a lot of fairly graphic violence, a surprising amount of scenes with Catwoman in her bra and some Bat on Cat action. It’s pretty obvious that the writer Judd Winick wanted the series to get a bit of notoriety straight off the bat (no pun intended). A sex scene with Batman certainly does that. The art by Guillem March is excellent although given the great panels in the comics it’s a surprise that the first two covers are a bit bland.

What about the story? Selina Kyle is Catwoman and I would have thought that with a reboot we would have started at an origin story but nope. In the first scene Selina is frantically trying to make an escape from some goons who are on their way to her apartment to kill her. We are dropped right in to the middle. It works though and we don’t really need to know much about Catwoman from the start to get involved with the story. Batman makes an appearance in the first issue as if he’s there to lend support and help sell a few issues much like the way Wolverine shows up in every X book. It is Catwomans story though and it’s a fun read although the violence can be a bit too brutal. The writer has said that this isn’t the fully formed Catwoman character yet and that she will be developing from a reckless and impulsive Selina to an older and wiser one in time. It’s a fun read and I recommend trying it out.
